Who lone soldiers are, and why Hanukkah is hard

A lone soldier is an IDF soldier with no immediate family in Israel to support them. More than 7,000 of them are serving today. Many come from the US, the UK, France, Canada and South Africa. Others are Israelis who are orphaned or estranged from their families. The army gives them extra support, including double pay, a monthly supermarket allowance and subsidised housing. It cannot give them a family table on a holiday night.

Hanukkah is when that shows. Israeli soldiers go home to parents who light candles and fry latkes and sufganiyot. A lone soldier often comes back to an empty apartment or a shared kibbutz room. Organisations that support lone soldiers say the same thing every December: what soldiers value most is proof that someone thought of them.

It isn't about the price. A ₪78 box with candles and a card from home can mean more than an expensive gadget.
Make it usable. Most lone soldiers don't own a menorah stash or a pantry. Candles, olive oil and snacks get used straight away.
Keep it light. Soldiers carry everything between base and home, so compact boxes work better than big hampers.

Why you should order inside Israel, not ship from abroad

Buying from an Israeli sender avoids customs completely: the box ships domestically, so the soldier pays ₪0 on arrival and never has to visit a post office on a short weekend leave. The Lone Soldier Center, the best-known support organisation, advises families not to mail parcels from abroad at all because of Israeli customs fees and paperwork. Where to deliver it and when to order

Send the box to an address where someone will actually answer the door: the soldier's apartment, their kibbutz, or their adoptive host family. Order by mid-November. Soldiers are usually on base during the week, and Israeli couriers deliver Sunday to Thursday only, never on Shabbat. That means the soldier is often away when the courier comes.

Three ways to make sure the box arrives safely:

Use the host family or kibbutz. Many lone soldiers have an adoptive Israeli family or live in a kibbutz group. Their address and phone number make delivery easy, and the box waits there for the next leave.
Give a phone number someone will answer. The courier calls ahead to coordinate. Add a roommate's or host parent's mobile as a backup.
Plan around the dates. Hanukkah runs from the evening of Friday, December 4 until Saturday, December 12, 2026. December is one of the busiest delivery months of the year, so ordering by mid-November leaves time for a soldier who only gets home every second weekend.

The Or Ofir Fund — "By the Light of Ofir" candles. The 44-candle set in the Rom and Neria boxes honours Ofir Libstein, a man of vision and community who fell in October 2023 defending his kibbutz, Kfar Aza. Each set includes a donation to the fund that continues his work: strengthening Gaza Envelope communities, building young leadership, and connecting Israel with Jewish communities around the world.
