How to Send Gifts to Israel Without Customs or Duties

Want to send gifts to Israel without customs or duties? The cleanest route is to order from a sender already based inside Israel: the box is delivered domestically, so it never crosses a border, never clears customs, and your recipient never opens the door to an import-tax bill. Hibuk Otef packs and delivers nationwide from our base near Modi'in. For the wider picture, start with our guide to where to buy Israeli gifts that support real producers.
Hibuk Otef — The Story Behind Every Gift
Hibuk Otef ("Enveloping Embrace") is a unique boutique gift initiative that brings together products from the communities of the Gaza Envelope and Israel's southern and northern frontier, alongside works of art that commemorate the beauty of the region. The project was founded to support local producers, farmers and entrepreneurs who were affected. 60% of revenues go directly to producers from the affected communities.
Israel's Import Tax Threshold in 2026: What Actually Changed
The headline number moved twice, and most guides online are still quoting the wrong one. In December 2025 Israel raised the tax-free ceiling on personal imports from $75 to $150. That rise never settled: on 24 February 2026 the Knesset voted 59–25 to revoke the order, and after the Tax Authority finished its system updates the threshold reverted to $75 on 2 June 2026. So as of today, parcels in the $75–$130 band that were briefly exempt are once again charged 18% VAT. If you read an article promising a $150 allowance, it is describing a rule that no longer exists. None of this touches a gift that is delivered locally inside Israel — but it matters enormously if you are thinking of posting a parcel yourself.
How the $75 Threshold Is Actually Calculated
The threshold test and the tax calculation use two different numbers — this is where most senders get caught. Israel's exemption is assessed on the value of the goods alone: shipping and insurance are excluded when deciding whether you are under $75. But once the parcel crosses that line, the tax is generally computed on the CIF value — Cost, Insurance and Freight together — so the shipping you paid becomes part of the taxable base. The bands run as follows: under $75, exempt from VAT, customs duty and purchase tax; $75–$500, exempt from customs duty but liable for 18% VAT and any purchase tax; above $500, treated like a commercial import. Two parcels sent to the same recipient within a short window can also be combined and assessed together.
Why a Parcel Shipped Into Israel Arrives With a Bill
When you post a gift into Israel from abroad, customs does not see a gift — it sees an import. The recipient, not the sender, is the one asked to pay: 18% VAT above the threshold, a customs-broker handling fee that often runs ₪35–₪100 regardless of the parcel's size, and purchase tax on certain categories. Food parcels carry an extra risk, because they can be pulled for inspection and held while the contents are checked. The practical result is a present that arrives two or three weeks late, with a payment demand attached and, in the worst case, spoiled contents. It is the precise opposite of what a gift is supposed to feel like — and it is entirely avoidable.
The Simple Fix: Send From Inside Israel
Do not ship across the border at all. Order from a gift company physically located in Israel and have the box delivered locally to your recipient's door. Because nothing is imported, there is no customs clearance, no import duty, no broker fee and no VAT surprise for the person receiving it. Hibuk Otef packs every box near Modi'in and delivers to any address in the country in 3–8 days depending on location, for a flat ₪45 + VAT — the same delivery price whether it is a single gift or a carton holding 4–12 boxes. You pay online from New York, London or Sydney; they simply receive a thoughtful, kosher gift. New to sending here? Choose by Budget: Kosher Boxes Delivered Anywhere in Israel
Every box below is kosher under local rabbinate supervision (most Badatz), delivered anywhere in Israel with no customs, no duty and no minimum — you can order any quantity. Prices include 18% VAT, with an approximate US-dollar figure at roughly ₪3 to the dollar. Most items keep for at least six months, so a box can be sent ahead of a date without spoiling. If you want to know exactly what a kosher certificate covers, see our guide to what "kosher" actually guarantees on a gift box.
Ella Box — ₪58 (about $19)
A compact designed box holding Upper Galilee honey, two preservative-free fruit conserves — pomegranate, apple-and-cinnamon or blueberry — and a pack of no-added-sugar date and nut bites. View the Ella box — the smallest gesture here that still puts money directly into a producer's hands.
Ayala Box — ₪77 (about $26)
An elongated box built around a 250 ml bottle of limoncello or pomegranate liqueur, paired with a 200 g jar of Upper Galilee honey and date and nut bites. View the Ayala box — a good choice for a thank-you, a new home or a mazal tov, and one of the few boxes at this price with a full-size bottle inside.
Sahar Box — ₪100 (about $33)
Cold-pressed extra-virgin olive oil from Otef groves, a 240 g fruit conserve, a 250 g jar of Upper Galilee honey and date and nut bites. View the Sahar box — the most balanced box on this list, carrying both the south and the north in one delivery.
Orel Box — ₪127 (about $42)
The premium pick here: a designed ceramic honey vessel with its own lid and spoon, cold-pressed olive oil from Golan or Otef groves, Upper Galilee honey and a date, nut and fruit bar. View the Orel box — the vessel stays on the table long after the honey is finished, which is why this one travels well as a corporate gift.
The Producers Behind Your Gift
Every item is made by a named small producer from Israel's south and north — that is the whole point of the model, with 60% of revenue going directly to those producers. Four of the makers whose work appears in these boxes:
Meshek 61 (South) — a small farm producing fruit conserves and cold-pressed olive oil in the western Negev. Their jams are cooked in small batches without preservatives, which is why the fruit still tastes like fruit rather than sugar.
Efrat Alfasi (Galilee) — a ceramic artist who throws the designed honey vessels that turn a jar of honey into an object worth keeping. Each piece is finished by hand, so no two lids sit quite the same way.
Tiv'it–BARBARY (Ashkelon) — makers of the date and nut bites that appear across the range, pressed with no added sugar. Ashkelon absorbed rocket fire throughout the war, and the workshop kept producing between alarms.
Moshav Manot Honey (Upper Galilee) — the apiary behind the honey in these boxes, working hives in the hills of the Upper Galilee. Beekeepers along the northern border spent long stretches unable to reach their hives during the fighting in the north.
Shipping a Box Out of Israel: The 2026 Reality
We do ship worldwide — but the rules outside Israel tightened sharply in 2025–2026, and you should know this before choosing that route. The United States suspended duty-free de minimis treatment for all countries on 29 August 2025, and on 24 June 2026 US Customs moved that suspension into permanent regulation — so the old $800 duty-free allowance is gone and effectively every parcel now requires a formal entry and duty payment. The UK point is subtler and catches almost everyone: its £39 gift relief only applies to a parcel sent by one private individual to another. A box you buy from a business and have shipped directly to a friend is a B2C transaction in customs terms, not a gift, so the £39 relief does not apply. Delivery abroad runs up to 15 days, or within 7 for an express fee. For a recipient inside Israel, local delivery remains cleaner, cheaper and faster in every case. $75 on the value of the goods, restored on 2 June 2026 after the Knesset revoked the increase to $150. Between $75 and $500 a parcel is free of customs duty but still liable for 18% VAT; above $500 it is taxed as a commercial import.
