Hibuk Otef — The Story Behind Every Gift

Hibuk Otef (“Enveloping Embrace”) is a unique boutique gift initiative that brings together products from the communities of the Gaza Envelope and Israel’s southern and northern frontier, alongside works of art that commemorate the beauty of the region. The project was founded to support local producers, farmers and entrepreneurs who were affected. 60% of revenues go directly to producers from the affected communities, and 10% to ‘Latet’ — the humanitarian aid organization.

What Makes Bezalel’s “Wrapping Memory” Prints Special?

The art in our boxes comes from “Wrapping Memory” (Zikaron Otef) — an illustration initiative by the Visual Communication department at Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, Jerusalem. Led by illustration head Amit Trainin, faculty, alumni and fourth-year students volunteered original artworks that capture the landscapes and communities of the Gaza Envelope exactly as they were before October 7, 2023. The project has raised over one million shekels for residents of the region. Each gift box carries one of these prints, so the beauty that was nearly erased travels on, gift after gift.

The Makers Behind the Art

Every print and product carries a name and a story. Here are four of the makers whose work travels in these boxes.

Bezalel Academy, Jerusalem — partner in the “Wrapping Memory” (Zikaron Otef) project: lecturers and fourth-year Visual Communication students volunteered illustrations of the Gaza Envelope’s landscapes as they were before October 7. These prints travel inside our boxes — turning a gift into a piece of remembrance. Our founder, Neta Lin Cohen, is herself a Bezalel graduate.

Be’eri Printing, Kibbutz Be’eri — the kibbutz print house, founded in 1950, was one of Be’eri’s main sources of income. After the October 7 massacre its banner read, “Despite everything, we must keep printing.” Today it produces the framed prints, greeting cards and recipe books in our boxes — each order a quiet “we are still here.”

Cafe Otef, Neve Eshkol — a boutique chocolate house in the Gaza Envelope. Its founder, Dvir Karp, was murdered at Kibbutz Re’im on October 7; his partner, Uri Steiner, chose to keep creating alongside the memory. The handmade pralines are among the finest in Israel.

Meshek Haviv, Negev — the Haviv family at Moshav Pa’amei Tashaz grows Arbequina olives on Negev soil and cold-presses an award-grade extra-virgin olive oil, hand-picked and pressed within hours. It is one of the most-loved items among our gift recipients.
